Brunel University's Green Week - "the future is fruity!"

Groundwork Thames Valley's Future Footprints project has been setup in collaboration with Brunel Green Society, London Borough of Hillingdon and sponsors Cadbury's plc. The project aims to engage with students across Hillingdon to encourage them to calculate their carbon footprint and to take local action to reduce it.

Green Week, the first of three events, was held between the 16th to 20th of February at Brunel University Student Union. The event was an overwhelming success. The steering team managed to recruit over one hundred students to carryout a WWF carbon footprint assessment - more than double the original target for the project.

The secret to this success was that in return for each students footprint the students received a summer fruits smoothie, goodie bag and membership to the future footprints project. The students loved the idea of making their own smoothie by cycling the bike. ‘This is bikelicious'', exclaimed one student.

The future footprint goodie bag contained an energy saving light bulb, power down curtacy of the London Borough of Hillingdon, grant information for students to claim insulation on behalf of their landlord and some delicious Cadbury's chocolate.

‘'Green Week's aim is to inspire students to think about their future footprints and to take action now'', said Richard Pollard - Education Manager, Groundwork Thames Valley.

‘'Brunel Green Society are very excited about running lots of events to raise awareness amongst students at Brunel", said Joe Greenwood - Democratic Support Co-ordinator, Union of Brunel Students

The Future Footprints steering group intend to follow up the results from Green Week by publicising a number of simple affordable actions which will help reduce each student's carbon footprint and support Brunel University's goal of reducing the impact of climate change both locally and globally.
