This week sees over £32,000 being given to local community groups and schools across the
Heathrow area. The grant scheme, funded by BAA Heathrow in conjunction with Groundwork Thames Valley, received over 120 applications this year from schools, community and voluntary groups.
A judging panel including representatives from local councils, Trinity Mirror Group newspapers, Groundwork Thames Valley and BAA Heathrow had the difficult job of helping to decide the allocation of grants this year.
Thirty-Eight groups across the Heathrow area have benefited from the 2006 BAA Environment
Awards. The exciting, local community projects work to address the "Local Agenda 21" Themes of green transport, health, environmental improvements, energy efficiency, recycling, nature conservation and green business.
Judy Claughton from Groundwork Thames Valley comments, "Congratulations to all the winners. 38 groups are supported in this years grant scheme to help make their community and environment projects a reality. We look forward to seeing your projects take shape over the coming year.
"Good luck to all the unsuccessful groups in their fundraising efforts. This year's scheme was over subscribed by 200% and sadly many great schemes had to be turned away because of the limited funding available."
Balwinder Dhaliwal at BAA comments; "We have been extremely impressed by the standard of entries to the BAA Heathrow Environment Awards 2006. It's fantastic that there are so many groups out there with exciting and innovative ideas to help make a difference to their local environment. BAA Heathrow is pleased to have an opportunity to help get these projects off the ground".
Philosophy behind the scheme:
The BAA Heathrow Environment Awards are based on the themes of Local Agenda 21 - an
environmental action plan for the 21st Century, which came about as a result of the Earth Conference in Rio 11 years ago and was enforced at the 10 year anniversary conference in Johannesburg August 2002. At the conference, the UK pledged to do its bit to preserve and enhance the environment through Local Agenda 21, which has seven key themes, transport, energy efficiency, recycling, nature conservation, improving community well-being, encouraging environmentally-sound business and preventing pollution.
