Despite its reputation for affluence there are considerable pockets of deprivation in the urban areas of the Thames Valley, for example in Slough, Reading or Wycombe.
Social exclusion, unemployment, health inequalities and crime are prevalent and often the affected communities live in poor quality physical environments. Addressing these issues begins with broad-based education for sustainability underpinned by specific job training, life skills and community empowerment projects.
